Bicycle thefts have spiked in the Port City, according to the Saint John Police Force.

Police have noted a roughly 66 per cent increase in the number of bicycles reported stolen between April and August of this year compared to the same period last year.

The police force is offering tips to help prevent theft, such as storing a bicycle inside a secure area.

If that is not possible, keep your bicycle in a visible and well-lit high-traffic area.

Police advise locking both wheels and the frame to the rack.

They also suggest securing bike components or removing them.

For added security, select a strong lock and combine two different types of locks.

Bicycle owners should also keep a record of their serial number, receipt, and photos of their bicycle which police can use to trace the bicycle in the event of a theft.
