UPDATE: Shortly before 6 p.m. the severe thunderstorm warning ended for Halifax.

The Halifax region is under a severe thunderstorm warning.

Environment Canada says meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing “strong wind gusts, up to nickel-size hail, and heavy rain.”

A strong thunderstorm 10 km north of Tantallon is moving southeastward at 20 km/h.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” the national forecaster says. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”

The national forecaster says you could see gusty winds and torrential downpours.
