Sussex will lose its emergency room for part of the weekend due to staffing shortages.

The Horizon Health Network says the emergency department at the Sussex Health Centre will be temporarily closed for the evening and night shifts all weekend starting on Aug. 5.

During the closure, patients will not be seen, and ambulances will be diverted to other hospitals. Patients requiring urgent medical care will need to seek treatment elsewhere.

People with non-urgent medical needs can call Tele-Care 811 or book a virtual appointment through eVisitNB if they have questions about the type of medical attention they require.

“Horizon apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause,” said the health authority in a statement.

“This decision was made to ensure safe and quality care for our patients and clients.”

Horizon said the department will be open during the following hours:

  • Friday, Aug. 5 until 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Aug. 7 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Regular 24-hour emergency department hours will resume on Monday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 a.m.

People experiencing a medical emergency are told to call 911.
