Volunteers are needed for a clean-up event taking place on Aug. 6 in the Grand Lake area.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada says it is cleaning up its Keyhole Property, located behind the cottage area of Princess Park on the west side of Grand Lake.

Grand Lake is the largest lake in New Brunswick and connects to the St. John River (Wolastoq River) system.

“This important shoreline and forest is still filled with debris left from the severe floods of 2018 and 2019, including parts of decks, roofs and siding from various cottages that were destroyed,” said Andrew Holland, national media relations director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, in an email.

Holland said in addition to helping clean the floodplain and forest, the clean-up will help fish, birds, plants and wildlife that rely on the natural habitat, a 173-acre property home to rare bur oak trees that was recently purchased by the organization for permanent protection.

There are only eight known populations of bur oak remaining in New Brunswick.

Holland said the volunteer event runs from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 6 and includes a free BBQ for those who help.
