Previously unrecorded species of insects have been found in Fundy National Park.

Parks Canada officials say 50 insect species were identified for the first time in the park in 2021.

Of those new species, more than half were found in the park’s pollinator garden.

Located across from the Headquarters Visitor Reception Centre, the 400 square metre pollinator garden is home to over 70 native plant species.

Officials say the insect data is extremely valuable as scientists address the significant challenges in protecting pollinators.

Pollinators range from tiny insects, like flower flies and beetles, to the more obvious bees, hummingbirds and butterflies, to the ones that come out at night like moths and bats.

Parks Canada says the information will be shared with entomologists around the world to better understand the presence and distribution of pollinators.
