Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre marks major milestone

A significant milestone for the new $600-million Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre (ASEC) in Moncton.

Construction on the science wing of the building is now officially underway, officials announced Friday.

The complex is being built in phases as an extension of the existing Gulf Fisheries Centre on Université Avenue.

Officials said the design, which was completed through a series of sessions and engagements, maintains the heritage façade of the original building.

It includes the rehabilitation of different building components and design ideas, most notably a portion of the front masonry façade and interior design of the galleria on the main level.

Occupancy for the science wing is anticipated in 2028 and the full facility is expected to be operational by 2032.

More than 700 federal civil servants from four departments and agencies will be housed in the facility once it is completed, including Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the National Research Council of Canada.

The Canadian Space Agency will participate in ASEC as a virtual partner.
