Four people escaped injury after their fishing vessel capsized off the coast of Grand Manan Island, according to the Canadian Coast Guard.

The incident happened just north of North Head on Saturday morning — the first day of lobster fishing season in the area.

A Canadian Coast Guard vessel advised the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax of the capsized fishing vessel, Nick & Ash 2021, just after 8 a.m. Saturday.

“All four crew members were safely rescued by two fishing vessels that were in the area,” a spokesperson for the Canadian Coast Guard told our newsroom.

A second Coast Guard vessel was tasked to respond but stood down when it was confirmed everyone was in good condition, according to the spokesperson.

The Canadian Coast Guard is conducting aerial surveillance of the area where the vessel sank and will continue to monitor for any signs of marine pollution.

“Owners are responsible for addressing hazards and pollution caused by their vessel. This includes the cost of cleanup or repairs, and any remediation action taken by the Canadian Coast Guard,” said the spokesperson.
