The former Yarmouth high school building on Parade Street (Acadia News)

Old Yarmouth high school could become medical clinic

A potential plan for the former high school building in Yarmouth.

The town has received an application to develop the building on Parade Street into a medical clinic, including a training academy and accommodations.

In 2021, the town had an agreement to develop the former school into mixed housing units, but the deal fell through due to high construction costs.

Mayor Pam Mood says costs went up 300 percent due to the pandemic.

She says housing and healthcare are the two most important issues in the community.

“When we lost the housing deal, to be able to switch it over to another big need like healthcare, I’m tremendously satisfied with that, excited about possibilities there. There can’t be enough medical clinics,” said Mayor Mood.

A public information session is being held at Town Hall next Wednesday.

There are some new housing developments being worked on in town, ground has been broken on Shaw Avenue and another is planned for Water Street.
