By Steve MacArthur Oct 12, 2024 | 10:25 AM

An investigation is taking place to look into murder investigations in Thunder Bay.

The new provincial oversight body will conduct an inspection of the Thunder Bay Police Service and its board.

It stems from several complaints related to ongoing murder investigations in the Indigenous community.

Inspector General of Policing of Ontario Ryan Teschner announced the review on Thursday.

There is no set time as to when the probe will be finished but it should be sometime next year.

In a statement on Friday, Thunder Bay Police Services Board chair Karen Machado said the board is fully committed to working collaboratively and transparently during the investigation.

The sent out a progress report on implementing past recommendations during the first two quarters of 2024.

”The board welcomes any further advice that will strengthen Thunder Bay’s police oversight system.” said Machado. “….we remain dedicated to implementing the necessary actions, policies and accountability mechanisms to ensure the diverse communities have the effective, responsive and accountable policing they deserve.”
