The name of the National Park Service Park Ranger who died Sunday in Voyageur National Park has been released.

He is 55-year-old Kevin Grossheim.

He died after a boat he was in capsized on Namakan Lake Sunday morning.

Grossheim had rescued three campers prior and was towing their boat through strong winds and rough waters.

All four were thrown into the water.

The three campers made it to shore safely and were unhurt in the ordeal.

Grossheim had been with the National Park Service since 1993,  and had worked at Voyeguers for over twenty years.

“Kevin was much loved by all and always known to go above and beyond,” states Voyageurs National Park Superintendent Bob DeGross in a release. “He will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to his wife and their loved ones.”

The National Park Service says Grossheim was a treasured member of the community.

He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Kabetogama Fire Department.

Details about memorial services for Grossheim are still being finalized.

Flags at all U.S. National Parks are being lowered in his honour until October 9th.

In the meantime, Sunday incident remains under investigation.
