A Dieppe firefighter is being honoured.

Captain Rheal Leger was one of many recognized at the 21st annual memorial ceremony of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF).

A delegation of Dieppe Firefighters travelled to Ottawa last weekend for the ceremonies.

Leger died in January 2023 of a work-related illness, after serving in Dieppe for 39 years. He was just 57 years old.

Leger began as a volunteer firefighter in 1984, earned a permanent position as a firefighter and emergency medical technician in 1987 and was promoted to captain in 2014.

Leger received a bravery medal in 2000 for saving a mother and her two children during a flood while off duty.

“This touching ceremony was a fitting tribute to Captain Rheal Leger, a great leader who was liked by all and who loved his job and his community,” said Fire Chief Marc Cormier.
