There are unconfirmed reports of a bear attack near the Shearwater Flyer Trail.
Department of Natural Resources (DNRR) officials are on scene and photos on social media show they have an entrance to the trail blocked off.
Photos show the barricade staff are setting up features a “bear in area” advisory.
The trail winds through Cole Harbour and Eastern Passage.
“A section of the Shearwater Flyer trail is closed from Bisset Road to Caldwell Road. Staff are on-site investigating an unconfirmed report of a bear attack in the area,” said DNRR spokesperson Erin Lynch in an email to our newsroom. “Out of an abundance of caution, staff will be setting some live traps. Any bears caught will be checked for evidence. If there are none found on the bear, it will be released.”
Department officials confirmed a person was injured on Sunday night, but they did not provide details on the extent of injuries or if they are consistent with a bear attack.
“We can confirm a person sustained injuries on the Shearwater Flyer Trail. For privacy reasons, we cannot provide details on those injuries. DNRR’s investigation is ongoing and we do not know how long the trail will be closed.”
They are asking anyone who sees concerning bear activity to contact them at 1-800-565-2224.
