Massive tech outage disrupts Microsoft services worldwide

By News Jul 19, 2024 | 7:37 AM

A massive global technology outage is impacting flights, banks and other industries in many countries.

The issue affecting Microsoft 365 apps and services was caused by a faulty update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike says the issue has been identified and isolated, and a fix has been deployed, however residual impacts continue.

“This is not a security incident or cyberattack,” George Kurtz, president and CEO of CrowdStrike, said in a statement on social media.

Some airlines have been reporting flight cancellations, including Porter, Delta, United, and American Airlines.

Many bank customers also reported delays in receiving deposits that they were expecting.

A telephone reporting system used by the Canada Border Services Agency was among the services impacted.

It allows small aircraft passengers and boaters to report to customs.

An agency spokesperson says they were able to work with service providers to minimize the disruption and restore services as quickly as possible.

No other services or systems used at the border were affected.
