Guidelines for homeless encampments to be brought back to council

City council is yet to settle on new distancing guidelines for tents in Thunder Bay.

A list of proposed guidelines was brought to council three weeks ago, but controversy arose with some of those guidelines.

Two guidelines were brought to council last night, stating that tents should be five meters from rivers and railways, and 20 meters from private property.

However, this led additional issues to be brought up during the discussion.

At large councillor, Trevor Giertuga, mentioned other flaws that he saw with the guidelines.

“Originally, I was going to increase the guidelines for private and non-private residences to 30 meters,” said Giertuga. “But let’s leave it for now, and I really think it should be more than that.”

Giertuga adds that he is also concerned with the five-meter distance from railways and rivers, saying that it should be ten meters.

Council decided to further consult and return to the list at a later date.
