Water quality problems at Parlee Beach Provincial Park could soon be a thing of the past.

The province is investing $4 million in the park, which includes a new stormwater collection system.

Runoff will be directed to a pumping facility where it will be treated with cartridge filters and undergo UV disinfection.

Tourism Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace said the project will address issues regarding water quality and storm and tidal water retention in the tidal creek and pond.

“Parlee Beach Provincial Park is a well-known and world-class attraction for tourists and New Brunswickers,” Scott-Wallace said in a news release.

“We will do our due diligence as a province to ensure the safety of area residents and visitors.”

The first phase involves installing the water collection and UV purification system. This will be followed by the dredging of the tidal pond and inlet.

Officials said work during the summer will take place primarily in and around the pumping facility and will not significantly impact park access.
