Education on boating safety is key before heading into water

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says marine rescue calls are more common than people think, and it’s important to educate yourself on boating safety.

On Tuesday, they received a 911 call to rescue two boaters.

The individuals boating near the Mission Marsh launch struck an object at the bottom of the lake, disabling their motor. The wind pushed them into Lake Superior, and they lost the strength to paddle back.

Platoon Chief, Jo Rucchin, was on the scene. He says there are ways to prepare in case of emergencies like this.

“It isn’t a regular occurrence, but it’s something that happens often enough,” said Rucchin. “People need to understand the waters that they’re in and the hazards in them.”

Boats should be well equipped and maintained.

“Be aware of your surroundings and shallow areas,” said Rucchin. “Most accidents are always preventable.”

He adds it is also important to make people aware of where you are going.
