An update from the province on recovery efforts following Hurricane Fiona.

Director of the Incident Management Division of the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office Jason Mew says applications for support, announced yesterday by Premier Tim Houston, will be available later this week through Service Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia Power

More crews continue arriving in Nova Scotia to help NS Power get the lights back on following Fiona.

Their latest update says 1300 people are in the field including power line technicians, forestry technicians and damage assessors.

Power has been brought back for more than 280,000 customers, while over 127,000 are still in the dark.

In Cape Breton, 49% of customers have power back while in the northeast part of the province, 43% have had power returned.

Canadian Armed Forces

We’re getting a better sense of the military presence in Nova Scotia helping to recover from Fiona.

Lieutenant Colonel Adam Poirier with the Canadian Armed Forces updated the public this afternoon.

He says there are currently 126 service members in Cape Breton, primarily in Glace Bay and Birch Grove today.

There are also 59 members operating out of Truro and teams are conducting assessments in the surrounding area.

The federal government also provided an update today about their efforts to aid the Atlantic provinces.
