A well-known couple is this year’s Citizens of the Year in Fort Frances.
Duane and Grace Cridland were honoured recently by town council.
The Cridlands have been longtime volunteers and have assisted financially to numerous groups and causes over the years.
Mayor Andrew Hallikas says they stand out as shining examples of community involvement.
“Wherever there is a need in Fort Frances, you will find Duane, Grace, or both of them or feeling that other members of their family present are willing to lend a hand. Grace and Duane, your dedication, generosity and hard work have had a profound positive impact on making Fort Francis a better place to live. You are truly an inspiration for others to become involved as volunteers,” says Hallikas.
Hallikas notes the Cridlands have assisted and supported numerous organizations and events such as the annual fireworks, the Spray Park, the Kiwanis Club, Tour de Fort, the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship, the Border Figure Skating Club and others.
They were instrumental in producing hand sanitizer during the pandemic and donating it to the hospital.
“They gave of their time and talents by serving on various boards and committees and providing mentorship to young entrepreneurs, and they have inculcated this tradition of generosity, volunteering and community spirit within other members of their family,” says Hallikas.
Speaking on their behalf, daughter Stacey says the parents are honoured and humbled by the award.
“To them, being a part of a community means more than just a place to live. Fort Frances has been so supportive of the many efforts they have made to make the community a better place to live. They are thankful to all the people who have volunteered their time and expertise, who have helped them along the way to be able to contribute to this community, a place they are proud to call home,” says Stacey Cridland.
The Cridlands says that, as a family, they are committed to continuing to serve the community to the best of our abilities.
