Residents are being warned of powerful synthetic opioid drug seized in Halifax.
Police say it was September 30, during an impaired driving investigation.
They say the drug, is similar to, but stronger than fentanyl. Fentanyl can be lethal with a dose as little as two milligrams: the size of two grains of salt.
The pills were a white triangle shape with a DD on one side with an 8, on the other and so potent that in an event of an overdose, several doses of naloxone may be needed.
Police say if someone shows signs of an overdose, call 911 immediately.
Common signs of an opioid overdose include:
- Severe sleepiness or the person cannot be woken up
- Breathing is slow or absent
- Snoring or gurgling noises
- Cold, clammy skin
- Lips and fingers are blue or grey
- Pupils are tiny
Police say naloxone is not a medical treatment for an overdose but can buy time before the victim possibly falls back into the overdose within 30 minutes.
This is the first seizure of this drug in the Halifax area.
