Next steps coming in November for potential housing development in Yarmouth

By Kevin Northup Oct 12, 2023 | 12:49 PM

We’ll know more about a potential housing development in the Town of Yarmouth next month.

The Planning Advisory Committee will make a recommendation on a proposed 2-building development at 236 Water Street.

A public meeting was held earlier this month for the project, which would see 56 units developed over 2 phases.

Mayor Pam Mood says housing projects are always exciting.

“We need new housing, we’ve got old stock. It’s a beautiful development. It’s great to have all the voices at the table, and once you hear all of that, you make your decision based off of that,” said Mayor Mood.

Mood says it would be right on the waterfront with a beautiful view, but it’s located in an industrial area.

She says mixed zones can work, and used Bishop’s Landing in Halifax as an example.

“All those high-rises right on the waterfront and one of the busiest streets in the city. People live there with a lot of noise happening and make a conscious decision to do that. No different here.”

Current zoning would allow a residential development on the site.

Council will have it’s first reading on the committee’s recommendation November 16th.

Another housing development that’s been in question in recent years is the conversion of the old Yarmouth High School on Parade Street into apartments.

Mayor Mood says they’re still at the table with developers trying to find a way to get it done.

“It’s not a dead project to us. It’s important to understand that costs have gone up over the last few years, and all the pieces have to fit together. It’s no different than grocery prices going up. We’ll have to wait for prices to match where they’ve been before. Things are coming down, so we’re hopeful. We do have some other developments on the go, there are lots of things happening, but things take time.”
