Federal New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh wants to address the lack of housing seen in communities across the country.
The NDP’s plan is to waive the GST on rental building construction, something the Liberals have done, but not in a way which addresses the issue according to Singh.
“They have no strings attached they just want to waive the GST and incentivize building. We want to incentivize building that actually that creates buildings that people can actually afford.”
Singh was in Thunder Bay Thursday morning for the announcement, a city which he notes, that has a one percent housing vacancy rate.
While the NDP is putting pressure on the Trudeau Liberals for the policy, Singh believes other levels of government should be involved as well.
“We’re going to continue to push the federal government to act, but the federal government needs to work with the provincial governments as well. Here in Ontario, its clear New Democrats have raised this issue again and again, the provincial government is not acting quick enough.”
Singh says he has spoken directly with Justin Trudeau on the issue, but believes public pressure is also needed to create change.
