In nine months the 2024 Ontario Winter Games will return to Thunder Bay and now they have a presenting sponsor, Hydro One.
Marketing and Communications Vice President Jay Armitage says the utility as put up $100k, which will go a long way to making the games and the city successful.
“Its such an opportunity to showcase this beautiful city and bring thousands of athletes in to really energize life in the city.”
Work continues behind the scenes as the countdown continues for the games, set to take place from February 15th to the 23rd.
Organizing Co-Chair Barry Streib notes having the support from Hydro One in place now will allow the committee focus on other aspects of the games and prove Thunder Bay has what it takes to play in the big leagues.
“We’ll do the very best job we can to show everybody that we are professionals when it comes to hosting major events. We’ve demonstrated that on a number of occasions, and we will continue to do that.”
Making up the organizing committee are 18 sub-committees, each tasked with a different operational aspect for bringing the games to life.
They include transportation, logistics, accommodations, and sport technical.
As well several infrastructure update proposals have been put in, which Games Coordinator Matthew Lawrence says will benefit the community long after the medals are handed out.
“Improving accessibility to Fort William Gardens is one piece that we’re looking to accomplish. Just to allow different para-athletes and guests coming in to utilize those facilities.”
Estimates provided by Lawrence suggest 3000 people will be coming into the city, which will include athletes, coaches and officials, which will in turn provide an economic impact of around $6 million for just Thunder Bay alone.
While it is great to have a presenting sponsor on board Lawrence notes they are still looking for others to come on board.
“We are still seeking out different partners at other levels as well and that work will be going on throughout the summer and the fall as well because it is such an extremely large event and there so many different working pieces.”
This year will mark 50 years since the games were last in the city.
