A study was done with Canadian Border Service agents to see if they’ve ever witnessed a colleague discriminate against a someone traveling.
The answer was yes, nearly a quarter of them.
Almost a thousand agents were surveyed in March 2020 and the results showed that close to three-quarters had witnessed travelers being treated unfairly because of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age or a combination of more factors. But only 16 per cent of those reported what they saw as some even citing fear of reprisal.
Respondents did agree to a point that in order to do their jobs effectively, they would need to recognize their personal and implicit biases.
The evaluation recommends the CBSA implement awareness, reporting and discrimination of travelers.
