Snow Day For Many Due To Winter Storm

By Brad Perry Dec 14, 2022 | 5:58 AM

The first major winter storm of the season in southeastern New Brunswick has resulted in a snow day for many.

A snowfall warning remains in effect for all of southeastern New Brunswick, including Moncton. Forecasters at Environment Canada were calling for up to 20 centimetres of snow.

Roughly 10 centimetres of snow has fallen as of early Wednesday, with an additional 10 centimetres expected throughout the day.

The national weather agency is calling for the snow to mix with rain Wednesday afternoon as temperatures warm up to just above the freezing mark.

As a result of the storm, all schools in the Anglophone East School District are closed for the day.

Most schools in the Francophone South School District are also closed for the day. Schools in Saint John, Quispamsis, Fredericton and Oromocto remain open.

Roads are snow-covered and there are a lot of slick spots, so you will need to adjust your speed and give yourself extra time to get where you are going.

Meanwhile, a meteorologist with The Weather Network says this retrograde low-pressure system is rather unusual.

Doug Gilham said storm systems like this one usually track from west to east across the region.

But Gilham said this storm is making a complete loop by coming in from the south, then turning west and then moving east to west.

“There’s extraordinary blocking in the atmosphere that’s causing storms to do loops and track backwards.”

From a meteorological point of view, Gilham said this system is very unique.
