Nova Scotia’s Liberal party has obtained to province’s alternative plan to a carbon tax through a Freedom of Information request.

The Liberals say the plan was submitted one month before the deadline to come up with an alternative to a carbon tax and lacked details on how they would achieve climate goals.

Party leader Zach Churchill says the FOIPOP shows Premier Tim Houston waited until the last minute to scramble for an alternative.

“So they sat on their hands for a year, even though they knew this was coming and at the end of the day all they could do was play politics instead of coming up with an alternative because they didn’t have time to do anything else.”

Churchill says their party had a system in place to prevent the need for a carbon tax.

“We haven’t had a carbon tax in Nova Scotia because the previous Liberal government negotiated a cap and trade system which priced carbon but also kept the price off the pumps to protect consumers.”
