If you are living in an RV at the Shubie campground you will not be able to stay next winter.
In an email to Acadia News, Councillor Tony Mancini says HRM owns the campground and the province funds operations, but the deal made is about to expire.
“The funding was going to be cut for the 2026 winter however it got extended with the understanding that this would be the last season of funding,” says Mancini.
RV living at the Shubie campground in the winter has been touch and go for a couple of years.
In 2024, Nova Scotia spent $145,000 to not only keep the spaces open at Shubie but to add five more, bringing the total from 12 to 17. That decision was made mere weeks before it was due to shut down.
Last year, the province forked over $160,000 to keep the spaces open again in 2026.
Each site costs $250 per month and includes electricity.
Those who stay there have access to outreach programs that address site-related concerns as well as food supply, healthcare and social services.
Those teams also work with residents to find long-term housing solutions like referrals and applications for the rent supplement program.
Our newsroom has reached out to the province for more information and whether the funding may get extended.
