Survey says many have trouble parking in downtown Yarmouth

Do you have trouble parking in downtown Yarmouth?

According to a new study, 43 percent of downtown businesses say they hear frequently from their customers and employees about parking problems.

The numbers are part of a study on downtown parking, it makes several recommendations to council.

Council will vote this week on a parking management strategy.

Mayor Pam Mood says her take on parking isn’t popular, but it’s honest.

“I’ve never had an issue parking downtown. The issue for folks I think, is that they want to park directly in front of the business they’re going to. That’s not how parking works,” said Mayor Mood.

Thirty percent of respondents said they frequently have difficulty finding a spot, 22 percent say always do, another 30 percent sometimes have trouble.

Mood says they’ll be looking at all recommendations, including clarifying street parking regulations.

“So folks understand very clearly what they can and can’t do, and how long they can be there. It is free parking on Main Street and in lots for two hours, after that you take the chance of being ticketed.”

The study also found only six percent of parkers exceed the two hour limit.

Other recommendations include more accessible spaces, increased signage, and to raise the monthly parking rate.
