Art will continue to be main feature at an historic building in Yarmouth.

The 114-year-old former Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on Main Street was purchased from the town in December by a local group.

They’re called the ‘Lands End Arts and Culture Society,’ formerly known as the ‘Friends of the AGNS Western Branch.’

The society’s Joann Ranson says owning the building is just part of what they want to accomplish.

“We’re also building a future, one where arts, community and culture are central to life in the region. We want a place for all ages to connect.” said Ranson.

The town purchased the building from the province in October, the society bought it from the town at a low cost.

Ranson says they’ve already had to spend $30,000 to fix a leaky roof.

“Buildings need love and attention, and maintenance had been paused for quite some time. One of our first actions was to repair the roof, which protected the building and allowed us to move forward with confidence.”

Fundraisers coming up

Ranson says they have several fundraising events planned, including a ‘Mardi Gras’ style event on Valentine’s Day.

Each month they’re planning on having workshops, a grand piano was also donated to them.

She adds they’ve already secured an exhibit for June.

“It will be special, and draw lots of tourists. We’re going to make efforts to connect with Boston galleries, as well as North Carolina and Florida to grow tourism in the region.”

The society is made up of a dozen members, Ranson says the building will be for the community to use.

“Our goal is to create a place where people come often. In the past, we weren’t as connected as we could have been, we’re striving to move forward with that vision.”
