The construction of the new Centre for the Arts by the Mulgrave Road Theatre is on schedule.
Artistic Director Emmy Alcorn says staff should move into the building by early March.
She tells us that they’ll need a couple of months to install the theatre equipment and make sure all the systems are working.
The Centre offers many facilities to local actors, artists, and community members.
“We have an art gallery for visual art. We also have flex offices that we can rent out if we want. Of course, we have the theatre itself that can be adaptable for many different uses. I love the flexibility in this building,” shared Alcorn.
It will have brand new state-of-the-art lighting equipment, two cat walks, a full kitchen, a green room, dressing rooms, and two showers for the actors.
She says the building really is at the dynamic intersection of professional arts, community development and responsible environmental stewardship.
“I’m really proud of the fact that we are zero carbon, and we’re going to be one of the greenest theatres in Canada, I believe, so we’re really setting an example of what an arts organization can do.”
They are also providing employment with newly hired positions of an operations manager and a technical director.
Alcorn says along with being in the final phase of construction, they are also in the final phase of fundraising with about 10 per cent left to raise.
There’s a link on their website if you would like to contribute and have your name on their donor wall.
When Hollywood star and director Ethan Hawke toured the upcoming Centre last year, he said he’s interested in attending the grand opening this summer.
