A Nova Scotian MP says the new trade deal with China a ‘big win’ for the seafood industry.

Jessica Fancy of South Shore/St. Margarets says she’s worked closely with the Prime Minister’s office in recent months.

She says the removal of Chinese tariffs on lobsters and crabs by March 1 is a ‘game changer.’

“A great first meeting in regards to repairing that relationship with China, and helping to diversify our markets, which the Prime Minister has been doing a lot of,” said MP Fancy.

She says she’s been advocating for tariff relief for the seafood industry, and making sure their voices were heard.

“I went into meetings knowing that we had 25 percent tariffs from China, and the U.S. currently has 16 percent. I hoped we’d be on par at least with the U.S. tariffs, but we ended up with a much better deal.”

Fancy adds lower tariffs mean stronger prices and more stability, and says a significant portion of the $500 million in Canadian lobster sold last year came from her riding.
