Sensory‑friendly program for children thriving in Guysborough

By Jessica Laing Dec 18, 2025 | 1:35 PM

Sensory‑friendly gym activities are offered by Devoted to Diversity in Guysborough.

Amber Hart started the program after having few options of local sports or recreation for her daughter with autism.

This made her want to give children with varied abilities a way to participate in group activities.

“Nobody’s blinking an eye if somebody has a bit of a meltdown. I just think that’s really important alongside people getting some physical activity,” she says.

Hart explains how in rural areas, you can do martial arts or dance but there aren’t always extra hands to help unless the parent is minding their own child.

The program takes place at Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex where kids are offered monthly gym sessions and occasional guest speakers, including nutritionists.

This program is grateful to receive monetary support from Nova Scotia Health’s community health board wellness fund for activities, a safe place and healthy snacks.

“I just want to express how extremely thankful I am for the funding and for the community for being so supportive and participating,” expressed Hart.

With about $3,000 given by the Guysborough County Community Health Board, Hart was able to formalize activities for 60 members of the community from what had just been informal gatherings among friends.

She is hopeful to expand the program to other communities and nearby municipalities that have already expressed interest.
