There was an emotional tribute to the Port Hawkesbury Rotary Club at Council this week after closing its doors for the final time this fall.
It was in September when it shut down after more than six decades, giving its members what the club calls, a much-needed break.
Tuesday evening, Patrick Laney along with other members, gave a thorough presentation on the club and what they have done over the course of 64 years.
Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton says it was a special moment.
“It was an emotional I think for the Rotary Club members in attendance, but also for council as well. Many of us, I think, have participated on a personal level on some of the programs and projects the Rotary Club had spearheaded over the years,” says Chisholm-Beaton.
One project in particular that comes to mind, she says, is the Port Hawkesbury Community Park.
“Over 400 people came to volunteer and to erect a park in a day, kind of like an old-fashioned barn raising,” adds Chisholm-Beaton.
Chisholm-Beaton says the club contributed to several programs since, including raising funds for the kid’s library, learning programs for youth, Christmas for seniors and more.
“I can’t even begin to touch on the significant footprint they’ve left on the community, but it has been tremendous,” says Chisholm-Beaton.
What’s next?
Patrick Laney asked the Port Hawkesbury community to reflect on what is next.
Chisholm-Beaton says what the future of service-based clubs is, is an important question.
“Maybe it’s a different service-based club that can continue to work with the community to help bridge needs. I think it’s an interesting question to ponder. Maybe the right person could be listening, and they would like to see a new chapter unfold for the Rotary Club.”
