Nova Scotia’s minister of health says there is still no tangible update on the Cobequid Health Centre in Lower Sackville.
Adding inpatient beds is a big part of the government announcement in 2022 to add capacity and the math that broke down where those beds would go- Cobequid was one of the locations.
Michelle Thompson told reporters, Thursday, there are a lot of moving parts and even the number of inpatient beds coming is unclear.
“The commitment is to make ensure that the services are there. I can’t speak to the engineering things. But we recognize that there is pressure on the system. The commitment is that we are going to create services and create spaces that can provide care into the future for folks living in the central zone,” said Thompson.
She added that planning is underway to better understand what the best way forward would be.
NDP has called on the government for answers on the expected expansion after patients spent days in the emergency department earlier this month.
In a statement, the official opposition said the Houston government refused to stand by their commitment.
“While the Minister of Health backpeddles on her government’s promise to upgrade the Cobequid Community Health Centre, patients and staff are left to cope with the consequences,” said MLA Paul Wozney.
“To walk back on this promise would be nothing short of a betrayal for the residents of Sackville and surrounding communities who depend on this health centre.”
Thompson said, they will work on communicating these things better in the future.
