A Moncton man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for aggravated assault.

Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence on Lockhart Avenue on January 3, around 8:35 p.m.

Police said they arrested a 62-year-old man outside the home without incident.

The man appeared in court the next day and was charged with attempted murder, according to the RCMP.

He was remanded into custody and was scheduled to return to court at a later date.

The man pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault on August 18.

Mounties said he was sentenced on November 12 to 789 days in prison.

On top of his prison time, he is prohibited from owning firearms, ammunition or explosives for 10 years.
