Nova Scotia will help support those spending the winter in an RV at Shubie Campground in Dartmouth again this year.
The province says HRM will receive about $160,000 to keep up to 17 spaces open for rent and to support winter operations.
Last winter, the province forked over $145,000 to create five more spots and keep the space open; a decision made mere weeks before it was slated to shut down for the winter.
In a news release, Minister Barbara Adams says they are committed to offering safer, supported options for people as the temperatures drop.
“Allowing a winter stay at Shubie Park gives residents certainty, connection and access to wraparound supports as we continue to focus on creating long-term, sustainable housing options for Nova Scotians experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” says Adams.
Outreach programs will address any site-related concerns and make sure there is enough food, healthcare and social services.
They will also work with those at the campground to find long-term housing solutions such as referrals and applications for the rent supplement program.
Eight people have already moved into the campground.
Each site costs $250 per month and includes electricity.
