The federal government is investing in a new recreation facility in Baddeck.

Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish MP Jamie Battiste announced up to $12 million for the Victoria Highland Civic Centre project Saturday.

The money is part of the Build Communities Strong fund announced in the latest federal budget.

“Budget 2025 is about building strong, resilient communities where Canadians can thrive,” Battiste said in a statement. “By strengthening local infrastructure, we’re creating opportunities, supporting families, and laying the foundation for a Canada that is stronger, more self-reliant, and ready to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.”

Battiste called the investment a watershed moment for his riding and for Cape Breton.

The provincial government announced in October 2024 it would contribute $5 million to the project, contingent on federal support.

The municipality is contributing $1 million and the community an additional $500,000.

The facility was forced to close last year due to mechanical and structural issues.

The new accessible facility is expected to include an ice pad, indoor walking track, community kitchen and a community meeting space.
