The next municipal election will be held in May.
Women are once again being encouraged to run.
An event called, ‘Women In Politics: Seeking Her Council’ will be held on Wednesday morning from 9 am until noon in Moncton to raise awareness.
“This would not be their first event. After encouragement from Elections NB and Enhancing Democracy initiatives leading up to the last election (pre-COVID), the City of Moncton organized this event in early 2020. They received some funding from FCM, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, to hold an event to attract more women to run. It was called “Women in Leadership- Planting the Seed,” Riverview Town Clerk Karyann Ostroski told our newsroom.
She added it was held in February 2020, right before COVID, and there was a snowstorm. That didn’t stop anyone from showing up, though, because it was really well attended and a great success.
“After receiving really good feedback, we said this needs to happen again around the next election,” Ostroski said.
Wednesday’s event is being held at Legend, at the Moncton Coliseum. It has been organized by the Tri-Communities and the South East Regional Service Commission. Pre-registration is encouraged.
Several guest speakers will share their experiences in the political world.
They include Senator Dawn Arnold, who is also Moncton’s former Mayor, and has also served as a City Councillor, MP and Minister Ginette Petitpas-Taylor, Former Riverview Mayor Ann Seamans, and Minister Lyne Chantal Boudreau.
“The need to encourage more women to enter politics is just as important as it was 10 to 20 years ago. Even in 2025, we still don’t have equal representation around the table on Council. Although progress is made, there is still work to be done around the table as a whole,” Ostroski stated..
She added it’s not just about fairness, it’s about building better governments.
“There’s a need for diversity of perspectives. Women bring unique insights and priorities to the table and ensure that our councils reflect the people they serve,” Ostroski said.
