The original article misattributed Martin MacKinnon’s quoted beliefs regarding the inclusion of “private life” in the Code of Conduct to Mr. Noel. This has been corrected, and we apologize for any harm from our error.

Lots of discussion about Dryden City council’s Code of Conduct.

The discussion centered whether actions in “private life” should count as a Code of Conduct.

Councillor Martin MacKinnon thinks the term “private life” should be kept in.

“I firmly believe that I’m entitled to say what I want, when I want and where I want,” MacKinnon told council during discussion on the by-law.

“But it didn’t take me long to realize that I was now a public official not a private person.  I had to conform to what was best for my community.”

Mayor Jack Harrison is in agreement that what councillors do in their private life should be included in the Code of Conduct.

“If you’re elected as a councillor, you are elected to perform your duties, and that’s what you are there for.  If you are not able to perform your duties, then, what impact are you going to have on those who voted for you and their communities.”

Dryden’s Code of Conduct by-law was sent to the Integrity Commissioner for review, and he agreed the term “private life” can continue to be used.

Council is expected to pass the revised Code of Conduct at their next open meeting in October.
