Premier looks to power ‘Wind West’ forward for N.S.

By Kevin Northup Sep 18, 2025 | 3:16 PM

Nova Scotia’s Premier says ‘Wind West’ is an incredible opportunity.

The proposed $60 billion offshore wind project would be able to power a quarter of Canada’s energy needs, according to Tim Houston.

A series of wind turbines would be built, with transmission lines exporting energy across the country.

Speaking after cabinet meetings Thursday, Houston said the province has the worst economy in North America when it comes to GDP per capita.

“This will produce an incredible amount of economic activity, and improve our GDP significantly. When that happens, the government has more opportunities to support Nova Scotians in the ways that it wants to,” said Houston.

He adds it will help with long-term stability for energy rates.

“Economic activity is important, along with energy rates and the royalty the government gets. But again, this a massive opportunity for Nova Scotians and we’re going to push on it as hard as we can.”

Last week, Ottawa identified ‘Wind West’ as a project of national interest.
