No one was injured in the fire that destroyed an apartment building in Middle Sackville, according to the Halifax Regional Municipality, and forced 180 from their homes.

HRM says it was the quick actions from Halifax Fire that prevented the blaze from spreading to a building next door.

As of Wednesday, 61 of the 64 units have registered with Red Cross, with a total of 139 residents.

The evacuation centre at Springfield Lake Recreation Centre on 266 Lakeview Avenue, will remain open only until 3 p.m., Wednesday.

Donations

The Encounter Church of the Salvation Army is collecting donations on Metropolitan Avenue, between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.:

• bottled water and other hydration products

• shelf-stable (non-perishable) food

• new clothing

• hygiene products

Next steps

Halifax Fire has made sure the fire is out and has released the building back to the owner.

The fire remains under investigation to determine where it started and the cause, with no current timeline on when it will be complete.
