Rabies found in bat near Fort Frances

By Randy Thoms Sep 15, 2025 | 1:38 PM

The Northwestern Health Unit says a bat found in the Rainy Lake area near Fort Frances has tested positive for rabies.

It is the first known case in over eleven years.

The Health Unit says 12 other animals had been tested over that period, including five cats, three bears, three bats, a cat and a skunk.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which tracks such cases, there have been 96 confirmed cases of rabies this year elsewhere in Ontario based on more than 1,500 samples.

The disease has been found in 90 bats and six Arctic foxes.

The northwest region is not endemic for rabies, but the Health Unit advises taking precautions when in the vicinity of wild animals or strays.

Avoid approaching, feeding or touching them, even if they seem healthy, and stay away from animals that are injured, appear sick or are acting oddly.

It also suggests ensuring pets and livestock are up to date on their rabies vaccines.

If you suspect you’ve been bitten, scratched or exposed to rabies, consult with a medical professional to assess if you need treatment.
