Carney announces tariff tackling measures, pauses EV mandate

New measures announced to tackle tariffs from the U.S. to boost our economy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement Friday afternoon in Ontario, after a two-day planning forum that focused on the economy.

Measures include pausing the federal government’s electrical vehicle mandate for 2026 with a 60-day review to happen, immediately.

In addition to that, Ottawa is introducing a Buy Canadian Plan when it comes to procurement and funding at federal institutions.

It includes a $5 billion fund to help businesses adapt to the changed landscape and help for Canola farmers impacted by the Chinese tariffs.

Loan flexibility, support measures and increasing exports were also part of the plan.

Carney said it is to help us be our best customer.

“Let me be clear, if we want our economy to grow, and we do, with thriving careers at home and booming exports around the world, we must once again become a country that builds. That builds big and builds fast,” said Carney.

Carney recently dropped many of Canada’s counter measures against tariffs, exempting goods covered by CUSMA.
