N.S. introduces new Alert app for those with poor cell service

By Kevin Northup Aug 28, 2025 | 2:20 PM

More people will have access to emergency alerts in Nova Scotia.

The province announced the new NS Alert app for those with older phones on 3G networks or Wi-Fi.

Emergency management minister Kim Masland says the right alert at the right time can make a difference.

“The current national alert ready system requires LTE or 5G networks, which we know aren’t available in many parts of rural Nova Scotia,” said Masland.

She says it will help fill gaps in cell coverage as more cell towers are built.

You can choose to receive critical and advisory alerts on the app.

It can also be sorted by community or location, and is available in English, French and in 32 other languages.
