No plans in Ontario to remove American-booze ban

A ban on American alcohol remains in place in Ontario.

American-made products were ordered off LCBO store shelves by the Ford government in March in response to U.S. tariffs being added to Canadian goods.

Premier Doug Ford says there are no immediate plans to lift that order.

“It’s still going to be banned until they cut the tariffs or we make a deal with them. It’s not coming on our shelves,” insists Ford.

A group speaking for the U.S. distilleries is pushing for American alcohol back on Canadian store shelves.

In a statement from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, Chief Executive Officer Chris Swonger says a recent decision by the Canadian government to remove a 25% tariff on American alcohol was a positive sign, but will not have much of an impact until those products are again sold in Canada.

“The unfortunate decision to remove American spirits from Canadian retail shelves is not only harming U.S. distillers, but it’s also needlessly reducing revenues for the provinces, and placing unnecessary burdens on Canadian consumers and hospitality businesses,” states Swonger.

Saskatchewan and Alberta reversed their bans in June.

Ford wants see movement from the United States before he follows their lead.

” If there’s a deal, another USMCA deal, which I don’t think is going to happen for the next few months. But you never know with President Trump. He could pull the carpet out from underneath us in a heartbeat, like he did before. Or they get rid of their tariffs, and then we’ll bring the booze back into the LCBO. And if they don’t, then they aren’t getting any booze on our shelves.”

According to Ford, American alcohol sales accounted for nearly $1 billion annually.

He says since the ban, Ontario wine sales have increased as much as 67%.
