Cross-border parade in St. Stephen will go ahead

A cross-border parade between St. Stephen, N.B., and Calais, Maine, will be going ahead after all.

The decades-long tradition is part of the International Homecoming Festival, which celebrates the area’s unique connection between Canada and the United States.

However, the St. Stephen portion of the parade was in jeopardy this year due to a lack of participation.

The Courier reported last week that the parade only had 12 confirmed entries, with three floats and nine groups made up of cars, ATVs, trucks and walkers.

Municipal officials wanted to have at least 12 to 15 more entries in order to have the parade go ahead.

In an update earlier this week, the town said it saw an “enthusiastic influx” of entries from community groups, businesses and cultural organizations, allowing the parade to move forward.

“We are thrilled to see such strong community engagement and renewed interest in the parade,” Jeff Renaud, the municipality’s chief administrative officer, said in a statement.

“Our original decision to cancel was not taken lightly, but with this overwhelming response, it’s clear there is significant appetite to see the parade return.”

The parade is scheduled to take place on Saturday, beginning at noon Atlantic Time on the U.S. side. It will proceed through downtown Calais and St. Stephen, where it will end at Brigg’s Plumbing on King Street.
