Severe thunderstorm warning for Thunder Bay area, potential for tornado

By Evan Taylor Jul 27, 2025 | 1:22 PM

Clouds move in as Thunder Bay sits under a severe thunderstorm watch on August 25/2023

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the Thunder Bay region, with Environment Canada warning of strong winds, large hail, and heavy rain moving through the area Sunday.

The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour, nickel-sized hail, and intense rainfall that may lead to flash flooding. There is also the potential for a tornado.

Areas east of the city, including Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and several surrounding lakes, are expected to be among those impacted. The system is moving quickly and could affect additional areas with little warning.

Residents are advised to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Emergency Management Ontario warns that flying debris, falling branches, and hail can pose serious risks to people and property. Local power outages are likely, and visibility may be suddenly reduced on area roads.

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm warnings when damaging wind, hail, or rain is imminent or occurring. These storms can also produce tornadoes with little notice.
