Premier Doug Ford says the government is willing to rescind the Keeping Students Class for CUPE.
Ford says that’s only if the union, which represents education workers, goes back to the bargaining table and allows students back in school.
“I have put out a massive olive branch,” Ford told reporters during a news conference this morning.
“I have have said I will rescind Section 33 based on them going back into the classrooms, getting the kids back to the classrooms. They can only control that. I can’t control that.”
Ford adds that his only goal is to get kids back into their schools.
“We just want CUPE to be at the table. They walked away from the table. We had no option but to use Section 33 to keep the kids in the classroom. That’s my only priority right now. To make sure the kids are in the classroom.”
Section 33 is the controversial use of the Notwithstanding Clause, to force a contract on CUPE workers.
The Notwithstanding Clause protects against any constitutional challenges of the legislation.
