Fort Frances Council to discuss report on Sunny Cove Camp

The future of Sunny Cove Camp is back before Fort Frances town council.

A report from town administration offers a number of options for council to consider regarding the camp.

The report was requested after council in February decided against accepting a tender to fix up Russell Hall, the camp’s main building, because only one bid was received and the cost offered was higher than anticipated.

Administration puts forth four options.

They favour changing the scope of the project and going back to tender, allowing the town to keep Northern Ontario Heritage Fund money that was granted in March 2024.

They say the town could seek additional partnerships to support ongoing maintenance and usage.

It also supports tearing down all derelict buildings, running the camp without facilities and rebuilding in the future.

The report says this would reduce operating costs but could lead to decreased revenue and less programming.

Selling off or leasing the camp is also provided as options.

Council earlier rejected the idea of selling off the camp, prompting the town to look at fixing up Russell Hall.

The camp has not operated since 2019.
