A provincial New Democrat suggests there is a need to include warning messages on social media.

Some professionals argue the length of time young people are spending on social media is having detrimental effects on sleep, physical activity and social activity.

Several Ontario school boards last year launched legal action against social media giants, claiming their platforms are hurting student learning and mental health.

The NDP’s Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Catherine Fife is proposing measures to address the concerns.

She says it starts with gathering more data.

“First, we must study the addictive design of these platforms, features like endless scrolling, autoplay, algorithm-driven content and constant notifications deliberately keep users engaged,” says Fife.

She says if a product harms children’s health, the companies behind it should be held accountable.

Fife also wants to see public health units playing a role.

“We must implement clear health warnings similar to those we use for tobacco or alcohol to help families make informed choices. Public health should be proactive, not reactive.”

“This is not about rejecting technology. It’s about protecting our children’s mental health and creating a safer, healthier digital environment.”

Fife tabled her Private Member’s Bill this week.

It is likely to be debated this fall.
