50 per cent steel, aluminum tariffs take effect Wednesday

By Jacob Moore Jun 4, 2025 | 10:18 AM

More tariffs from the U.S. president take effect Wednesday.

Donald Trump has doubled the tax on steel and aluminum exports entering the U.S. to 50 per cent.

In March, 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum took effect.

The Aluminium Association of Canada says the new charge would total about $1,300 per metric ton of aluminum.

The group says that makes aluminum exports economically unviable.

According to reports, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office says the tariffs are “unlawful and unjustified.”

Canada also exports more aluminum and steel to the U.S. than any other country.
